Should You Extend Your Vehicle Lease or Replace It?

When a vehicle agreement is coming to an end, there’s no one right answer. Here’s how to decide whether to extend or replace.

In brief
  1. 01Extending a lease can add flexibility and protect cash flow, but not every agreement can be extended.
  2. 02The lowest monthly payment isn't always the cheapest option once maintenance and downtime are counted.
  3. 03Speak to your broker or funder a few months before your agreement ends, so you're not rushed.

When a lease agreement is coming to an end, businesses have a choice to make: extend the agreement, keep the vehicle running in another way, or replace it.

A reliable vehicle can still be good value beyond its original term. But as vehicles age, maintenance, downtime and running costs tend to rise. The best decisions are based on the full picture, not on gut feeling.

01

Don't just compare monthly payments

Focusing only on the monthly cost is one of the most common mistakes. Extending a contract hire agreement can cost about the same as replacing the vehicle, and sometimes less, but the payment is only part of the story.

The true cost of running a vehicle includes maintenance, unexpected repairs, energy or fuel, hire vehicles when it's off the road, and the time and productivity lost while it's out of action.

Five questions to ask

Is it still reliable?A dependable vehicle with little downtime may still be good value. More breakdowns, repeat faults or trips to the workshop point towards replacing it.
Are maintenance costs rising?Costs usually creep up with age, and vehicles without a maintenance package carry the risk of a large unexpected repair bill.
Does it still fit the job?Changes in mileage, payload, routes or driver needs can make a vehicle less suitable than it was.
What does downtime cost you?For many businesses, downtime costs more than maintenance once missed jobs, hire vehicles and disruption are added up.
What would a newer vehicle save?Newer models can bring lower running costs, better safety and more reliability. The question is whether that outweighs the cost of switching.
TCOTotal cost of ownership, not the monthly payment, is the best guide to whether to extend or replace.
03

Look beyond the vehicle

Market conditions can change which option makes more sense. Things to weigh up include the cost and availability of a replacement, manufacturer offers, funding costs, used vehicle values and lead times.

Technology matters too. If you're running petrol or diesel vehicles, the end of an agreement is a natural point to look at whether an electric replacement would suit your business. EVs have fewer moving parts to service, and the choice of electric cars and vans has grown quickly.

Not every agreement can be extended

Whether you can extend depends on the type of agreement, the funder's policies and the terms of your original contract. Getting in touch a few months before your agreement ends gives you time to compare the options properly rather than making a rushed decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend my vehicle lease? Many contract hire agreements can be formally extended, subject to the funder, their pricing and the original terms.
Is it cheaper to extend? Not always. Extending can lower short-term costs, but rising maintenance, downtime and running costs can make replacing the better value.
What happens at the end of a finance lease?Options can include a secondary rental period, refinancing, or selling the vehicle. The right choice depends on your agreement.
How long should a business keep a vehicle? It depends on the vehicle, mileage, maintenance history and how it's used. Total cost of ownership is a better guide than age alone.
