Electric Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Range, Charging and Everything You Need to Know

Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling saloon has gone electric, with a long range, very fast charging and a striking new look.

In brief
  1. 01The first fully electric C-Class is on sale now, alongside the petrol and hybrid models.
  2. 02Up to 452 miles of WLTP range from a 94.5kWh battery.
  3. 03An 800V system adds up to 200 miles in around 10 minutes on an ultra-rapid charger.

The C-Class has been one of the most popular executive cars in the UK for decades. Now, for the first time, it's available as a fully electric car, sitting alongside the petrol and hybrid versions.

It's built on Mercedes' new 800-volt electric platform, shared with the GLC Electric, and it's designed for drivers who cover serious miles.

A new look for the C-Class

The electric C-Class has a sleeker, more coupe-like shape than the petrol car, shaped with aerodynamics in mind. The most eye-catching detail is the front grille, which features 1,050 illuminated dots.

Slim lights at the front and rear give it a clear family resemblance to the new GLC Electric.

How far can it go?

The UK launch model is the C 400 4Matic, with a 94.5kWh battery and up to 452 miles of WLTP range.

A single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version is due to follow, and it's expected to go even further.

Peak charging speed is 330kW. UK cars come with the converter needed for 400V chargers as standard, so you're not limited to the newest ultra-rapid networks.

The C-Class also supports bidirectional charging, so it can power devices, and with compatible equipment it can supply energy to your home or the grid.

Performance and comfort

The C 400 4Matic has two motors, all-wheel drive and 489hp, taking it from 0 to 62mph in around four seconds.

Air suspension is standard on the top two trims and optional on the others. Rear-axle steering of up to 4.5 degrees cuts the turning circle to 11.2 metres, which is impressive for a car this size.

Is it worth a look?

If you want an executive saloon that can genuinely cover long journeys without planning around chargers, the electric C-Class is one of the strongest options available. It goes up against the BMW i3, Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal and MG IM5.
